GM hires while Toyota fires?

GM announced it’s re-hiring more than 700 laid off workers in Ontario, bouncing back from the worst crisis in its history. All this right around the same time Toyota is slapped with a record $16.4 million US fine. GM is responding to growing consumer demand for their Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, both popular crossover utility vehicles.

GM had to shut down most of its North American operations last year due to low consumer demand and the near-collapse of its parent company. GM will be using their excess capacity at Oshawa, adding a third shift in October, which will see about 600 employees recalled with an additional 110 laid off workers at CAMI being recalled. GM is also expecting to add another 70 jobs by August, which will be the first time they have added new jobs in Canada since 2002. GM is hoping to meet the high US demand for their Equinox. Their new production strategy should result in an additional 60,000 to 75,000 units a year.

The recent recession forced GM to scale back production to their core brands of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The company has decided to wind down their additional options such as Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and Hummer. The outlook of the company began to improve in late 2009 as consumer demand began to grow once again. Additional overtime shifts have been added to keep up with the high demand for the company’s Chevrolet Camaro and the previously announced addition of the Buck Regal to the Canadian production line-up. This will see GM add another shift to their Ontario plant in 2011.

General Motors and its Canadian subsidiary were almost wiped out last year during the economic downturn. The demand for larger, gas-guzzling vehicles has declined considerably as more economic, fuel-efficient vehicles are what consumes are looking to buy. This domino affect caused GM to shed about 2,600 jobs and one plant closure affecting an additional 1,000 workers. US government intervention kept the US-based company afloat throughout 2009, however, GM eventually filed for bankruptcy protection in June, mere days after receiving a multi-billion bailout package from the US, Canadian and Ontario governments.

This re-hiring news by GM is key timing for the company’s previous workers who were brought to their knees last year over the collapse of the North American auto industry. Most of these people have exhausted their employment insurance and other social benefits. If you are still rebounding from a job layoff or too much debt and are in need or financial advice or a consolidation, there are many private loan companies that can help. Bad credit is not a problem as some private lenders specialize in bad credit loan. These financial institutions can easily be found on-line. Some even offer 24 hour, no obligation applications.

A GPS navigation device can save you time by helping to guide you to your destination. You don’t need to waste time looking at a map or stopping to ask for direction along the way. Instead, you’ll have instant access to your directions in real-time format.

It is cumbersome to look at a paper map while driving.  The only safe way of looking at it is to pull over to the side of the road or get a passenger to read it for you.

For female drivers who drive alone or at night, traveling with a gps navigation system offers safety and prevents them from getting lost. They don’t have to stop at unknown places to ask strangers for direction.

The GPS navigation system is like having a map that is constantly updated with the latest information.  No more guessing is involved.  The GPS device gets its information from a large bank of data that is constantly being updated to ensure accuracy.

For the most complete navigation, choose a system that gives you both audio and graphical directions. This allows you to see the map on the screen as well as to hear the specific spoken directions.  Some GPS navigation systems integrate the radio speaker system to speak to you. Before purchasing a GPS device, be sure to think about your need for audio and visual guidance.

There are various brands, features and types of GPS navigation systems to choose from. More sophisticated systems obviously will cost more than simpler models. Some units are portable and can plug into the cigarette lighter.  Others require technical installation.  Keep in mind that some manufacturers will void the warranty unless the unit is installed by a certified dealer. As technology is constantly evolving, you should purchase a GPS navigation device that is upgradable.

Think about how you will be using your GPS navigation system. Some units can tell you where the nearest point of interest.  For example, you can ask to search for the nearest grocery store and the GPS device may be able to give you several options along with directions. Stucked in a traffic jam? Use a GPS navigation device to help find alternative routes. If you want to get your destination in the quickest way, a GPS system can give you direction and time of travel.

Which Is Better? Leasing A Car Or Buying One?

By Amy Nutt

There is nothing quite like the feeling of buying a brand new car. Most people have a few clunkers, and maybe a lemon or two as their first few cars, while they save up for a decent down payment for their dream car. Nowadays however, with every major car company allowing people to lease a vehicle rather than buying it, saving up for a down payment is not as necessary as it used to be.

Leasing dropped into the car scene a few years ago and has been viewed as a life saver to many would be car owners. When you think about it, what person wouldn’t choose to pay $175 or $250 a month for a car instead of $350 or $500? Leasing prices are much lower than monthly payments, no matter how big your down payment is! Some companies offer leasing packages that almost sound too good to be true. However, they usually are too good to be true!

If you are looking to buy a new car but you are dragging your feet about paying a high monthly payment, the leasing option is probably starting to look really good to you. If you do your research however, you will ultimately find that buying your car is almost always the smartest thing to do. I would say that the only exception to this is if you have moved somewhere for a short period of time for your job, or for schooling and you need a car. In these cases, leasing would be a smart thing to do, as long as you are not planning any long road trips.

When you enter into a leasing agreement, you are basically borrowing a car from a company, with the understanding that if anything should happen to the car, you are 100% liable, and you will have to pay any damages. When you buy a car, the same applies, but when you own your car, you don’t have to give it back after putting your money into it!

When you lease your car, the lease agreement is usually for four to five years, after which you will have the option to give it back (once the car company has made absolutely sure it is coming back with no scratches or dents!) or to pay the remaining thousands cash down so you can own the car. The monthly payment for leasing is lower, but it is still cheaper and better in the long run to buy the car and pay more per month.

If you own your car, you make the rules, you decide if a dent or scratch really does need fixing and if it does, you can decide where you want to get it fixed. You can also drive as far as you like in a year, and not worry about paying for your mileage. Leasing agreements usually give you 20,000 kilometers or miles per year an you will pay a lot extra to be able to drive more in a year.
